Production Work Orders

1. Overview & Purpose

What are Production Work Orders (Runs)?
Production Work Orders governs the manufacturing batch lifecycle. It schedules batch production runs against standard recipes, manages supervisor authorizations, tracks factory floor execution, and coordinates raw material deductions with finished goods intake.
Menu Location:Production > Runs

2. When to Use Production Work Orders

Scheduled Daily Batch Manufacturing (Make-to-Stock)

Central bakery or packaging facility schedules daily production of 1.000 loaves of bread based on historical store replenishment forecasts and oven capacity.

Recommended Action:Create a Production Run selecting recipe, operating branch, target storage room, batch output multiplier (10x), and scheduled execution date.

Make-to-Order Custom Wholesale Fulfillment

A B2B corporate customer places a confirmed Sales Order for 500 customized gift sets requiring immediate assembly and packaging.

Recommended Action:Generate a production work order tied to the corporate Sales Order requirement, ensuring finished goods route directly to the outbound delivery picking bay.

Floor Shift Handover & Work-in-Progress (WIP) Stage Tracking

Plant supervisors track batches moving across physical production stages (weighing ingredients, mixing vats, oven baking, and final packaging).

Recommended Action:Update run status from APPROVED to IN_PROGRESS upon staging, allowing floor managers to monitor active WIP duration and machine line utilization.

Machinery Malfunction & Batch Scrap Stoppage Protocols

An industrial oven or sealing machine breaks down mid-run, contaminating or ruining a partially processed manufacturing batch.

Recommended Action:Halt the work order with status REJECTED or CANCELLED, enter mandatory breakdown justification notes, and record scrap quantities for insurance audits.

Sub-Assembly Staging Run for Intermediate Inventories

Running a specialized batch to produce 2.000 intermediate hamburger patties that will be frozen and drawn down across daily kitchen shifts.

Recommended Action:Schedule a work order specifying the sub-assembly recipe; output items post into Intermediate Cold Storage ready as ingredients for final meals.

5. Scheduling a Production Run

1

Open Production Runs Directory

Navigate to Production > Runs from the primary sidebar.

2

Launch Run Creation Form

Click Add Production Run button in the upper toolbar.

3

Select Active Recipe Formulation

Pick target product formula and enter target batch output multiplier.

4

Assign Factory Facility & Date

Select operating Branch, Location, and scheduled Production Date.

5

Submit for Manager Approval

Click Submit to route work order for plant supervisor approval.

6. Execution & Quality Monitoring

1

Plant Manager Review

Supervisor validates ingredient stock availability and approves work order.

2

Start Run Execution

Click Start Run when technicians begin processing materials on factory floor.

7. Completion & Reversal Rules

In-Progress Work Order Protection
Runs with posted material issues cannot be deleted or cancelled directly. The issued raw materials must either be processed into Finished Goods Receipts or reversed via Material Issue Reversals first.
1

Cancel Unstarted Run

Work orders with no issued materials can be cancelled with mandatory reason notes.

Runs with posted material issues must be completed or undergo material reversal first.

8. Cross-Module Impact

Target SubsystemRelational & Transactional Effect
Raw Material IssuesRequires an active APPROVED or IN_PROGRESS run to record ingredient warehouse deductions.
Finished Goods ReceiptsWork order completion requires finished goods receipt intake to credit inventory.
General Ledger AccountingCoordinates Work-in-Progress (WIP) asset valuation transfers into Finished Goods inventory.
Operational Best Practices
  • Always lock batch sizes to standard machine capacities to minimize mixing variance.
  • Review actual vs standard yield percentages immediately upon batch completion.
