Warehouses & Storage Management (Storages)
1. Feature Introduction & Layout Structure
What is the Storages module for?
Inventories Web organizes physical storage spaces into an expandable hierarchical tree. Higher-level nodes (such as Main Warehouse or Aisle A) serve as spatial groupings, while the terminal end-nodes (Leaf Node / Bin) are the exact physical shelf slots where inventory quantities are assigned and physical balances are maintained.
2. Real-World Storage Partitioning Scenarios
Review these operational scenarios to design an efficient physical storage hierarchy for your facilities:
| Facility Type | Physical Layout Scenario | Application Action |
|---|---|---|
| Simple Retail Store Layout (Sales Floor vs Backstore) | A retail boutique or supermarket maintains a customer-facing sales floor display alongside a secure backroom reserve stockroom. | Create two root-level storage nodes (Level 1): "Sales Floor Display" and "Backstore Reserve" to support automated shelf replenishment transfers. |
| Multi-Tier Logistics Distribution Center (Zone > Aisle > Rack > Bin) | A large distribution hub spanning thousands of square meters requires granular item coordinates so warehouse pickers locate SKUs in seconds. | Construct a 4-tier tree: Level 1 (Dry Goods Warehouse) > Level 2 (Aisle A) > Level 3 (Steel Rack 01) > Level 4 (Bin Slot A-01). |
| Quarantine, Damaged Goods & Return Isolation (QC) | Customer returns, crushed packaging, or items pending quality inspection must be physically isolated so cashiers or sales orders cannot pick them. | Create a dedicated storage node named "Quarantine / Damaged Goods". Ensure this storage is never designated as an active picking zone. |
| Raw Material vs Finished Goods in Central Kitchens | A food manufacturing commissary requires strict physical segregation between raw perishable ingredients (chillers/freezers) and boxed finished goods. | Register separate root storage rooms: "Cold Storage Ingredients" for Material Issues, and "Finished Goods Racks" for Production Receipts. |
| High-Value Security Cage / Vault Storage | Smartphones, jewelry, or premium liquor require restricted-access locked cages with independent physical stock counts. | Configure a dedicated "High-Value Vault" storage node under the warehouse facility to restrict user access scopes. |
3. Before You Begin & Hierarchy Rules
Ensure the following preparations are verified before structuring racks and storage bins:
4. Form Field Definitions
The table below explains every input field on the storage creation and edit modal:
| Form Label | Input Type | Required | Operational Purpose & Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Location (locationId) | Location Selection | Required | Parent retail store or warehouse facility where this storage exists. Pre-filled based on the top location selector. Example: Cakung Central Logistics Hub |
| Parent Storage (parentId) | Hierarchy Selection | Optional | The parent tier above this node. When left empty, this node is created as a Root Storage (Level 1). Example: Main Warehouse, or Aisle A |
| Storage Code (code) | Unique Text | Required | Unique alphanumeric identifier matching physical shelf barcode tags in the facility. Must be unique within the location. Example: RAK-A01, BIN-01, DISPLAY-FRONT |
| Storage Name (name) | Descriptive Text | Required | Human-readable storage area name used by warehouse pickers and inventory auditors. Example: Dairy Cold Shelf A, Infant Formula Rack 02 |
| Status (status) | Radio Selection | Required | Active status. Active storages can receive stock transfers and goods receipts; inactive storages are disabled from new inventory movements. Example: Active / Inactive |
5. Hierarchical Tree Interface

6. Adding a Root Storage Area
Steps to create a standalone primary warehouse room or zone (Root Node):
Open Storage Console & Select Location
Location Filter SelectorNavigate to Business Setup > Storages. In the top filter selector, choose the retail store or warehouse location whose layout you wish to configure.
Adding a Root Storage Area (Tier 1)
Add Storage ButtonClick the Add Storage button above the tree view. The modal opens with the Parent Storage field left empty.
7. Adding Sub-Racks & Bins (Child Nodes)
Steps to create nested aisles, steel racks, and discrete bins under a parent room:
Adding Sub-Racks & Bins (Tiers 2-4)
To create a nested shelf or bin under an existing area, click the plus (+) icon on that parent row in the tree view. The Parent Storage field auto-fills with that parent name.
Enter Storage Code & Descriptive Name
Input the unique Storage Code and descriptive Storage Name matching physical barcode tags in the facility, then ensure status is set to Active.
Save Storage Entity
Save ButtonClick Save. The storage node renders immediately in the tree view and is ready for inventory putaway.
8. Updating & Deleting Storage Nodes
Safe procedures for modifying storage names or archiving bins without violating ledger integrity:
Select Storage Node in Tree View
Expand the tree arrows to locate the specific rack or bin node you wish to update.
Open Edit Modal
Edit Action IconClick the Edit action icon (pencil) on the selected storage row.
Update Details and Save
Modify storage name or active status according to physical warehouse reorganization, then click Save.
Deactivating a Storage Node
Open the Edit modal, switch status to Inactive, and save. The storage will be hidden from new Goods Receipt and transfer selection lists.
Deleting a Storage Bin (Leaf Node)
The Delete action icon (trash can) is enabled only on terminal leaf nodes that have no children beneath them.
9. Operational Results & Inventory Impact
Storages dictate the precise physical coordinates where quantities sit. The following functional modules interact directly with storage definitions:
| Related Subsystem | Operational Effect & Relationship |
|---|---|
| Inventory Stock Balances (Stock Balance) | Physical Quantity On Hand (QOH) is bound directly to specific leaf storage nodes, allowing pickers to locate physical goods instantly. |
| Internal Stock Transfers (Intra-Location) | Warehouse staff can transfer inventory from "Backstore Pallet Rack" to "Sales Display Bin" within the same facility location. |
| Stock Audits & Opname (Stock Opnames) | Physical cycle counting can be scoped specifically to individual aisles or racks without freezing the entire warehouse. |
| Supplier Receiving (Goods Receipts) | Merchandise received from purchase orders is allocated directly to designated storage bins during dockside putaway. |
10. Common Issues & Solutions
Common problems and validation blockers encountered during storage configuration, with step-by-step solutions:
| Issue / Error Message | Underlying Cause | Recommended Resolution |
|---|---|---|
| The Add Storage button is disabled or unresponsive | No location has been selected in the top dropdown filter. | Select an active Location from the top dropdown filter to activate the tree layout console. |
| The Delete button is disabled or missing on a storage row | The storage node has nested child nodes beneath it, or still contains physical inventory stock balances. | Transfer remaining stock balances out via Stock Transfer and delete all nested child bins before deleting the parent node. |
| Items cannot be received into a specific storage node during Goods Receipt | The selected storage is a parent node rather than a terminal Leaf Node. | Create terminal bin nodes beneath that parent room, then receive merchandise into the leaf bin. |
Operational Best Practices
- Ensure digital storage codes match physical barcode stickers on warehouse shelves (e.g. RAK-01, BIN-A12).
- Maintain a dedicated "Quarantine / Damaged Goods" storage in every warehouse to isolate defective customer returns from saleable stock.
- For small retail stores, a simple 2-tier tree ("Storefront Sales Floor" and "Backstore Reserve") is sufficient and easier for staff to navigate.
